Kayla Santiago To Become First Female Sports Director In Rowan Radio History

Kayla Santiago will become the first female sports director in Rowan Radio history in May.

Santiago, who finishes her term as Rowan Radio Digital Media Director in April, was named sports director for the upcoming 2021-22 school year on Monday.

During her time as a student at Rowan University, Santiago has provided play-by-play work for Rowan University athletic contests including basketball, football, and softball.

Recently, she was a play-by-play announcer and color analyst for the NBA G League’s Delaware Blue Coats including calling the championship game.

“It means a lot. I’m really thankful that I was selected for this position. This is what I want to do for my career. I love sports and I have such a big passion for it,” said Santiago.

“At the end of the day this isn’t “a man’s job”, it’s for someone who loves what they do and works hard at it. I hope this can help other women realize that they can break barriers too and change the narrative that only men know sports.”

She will replace Gary Erdelyi, who graduates in May and has served as the station’s sports director for the past two years. Besides calling games together, Erdelyi and Santiago co-hosted “The Third And Long Podcast” – a weekly look at NFL and college football – last fall.

“She’s fantastic at what she does – whether it’s as an on-air announcer or hosting a sports talk show. She is the best person for the job.” said Erdelyi.

Santiago will officially take over as Rowan Radio Sports Director on May 1.
