Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM won four Communicator Awards on Wednesday in the organization’s 25th annual competition sanctioned by the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts.
Concussion Protocol: How Concussions Haunt the Game of Football earned an Award of Excellence in the News Production category. Through expert interviews and research, the piece investigated the serious effects of concussions in football.
The win marks the third award thus far for the documentary produced by Joe Stauffenberg and Sean Remington. Previously, Concussion Protocol won first place in the Garden State Journalists Association’s annual awards competition last month for Best Sports Feature. Meanwhile, it received a Platinum Award in the Hermes Creative Awards contest last week.
Making A Musician garnered the station’s second Award of Excellence in the News Production category. Produced by Justin Brown and Jonathan Baker, the documentary examined the lives of local musicians including life on the road. This is the second honor for Making A Musician, which received a Gold Award from the Hermes Creative Awards last week.
Making A Musician and Concussion Protocol were created in conjunction with Rowan University’s Radio Production course instructed by Rowan Radio Assistant Station Manager Leo Kirschner.
A Community Affair hosted by Kaitlin Kline won an Award of Distinction for Best News Program. The award-winning entry covered an incident last fall involving two unarmed Rowan University students being detained and having guns pulled on them by Glassboro police.
Kline’s efforts for that same show won a Gracie Award in April and collected first place for Best Talk Radio program in the Garden State Journalists Association’s awards contest last month.
Meet Rowan Radio – an inside look at the station’s Executive Staff members – earned an Award of Distinction for Best Social Media Campaign.
During the spring of 2018, former Production Director Matteo Iadonisi directed and crafted a video social media campaign for Facebook and Instagram that highlighted the station’s Executive Staff; their day-to-day duties; and favorite Rowan Radio memories.
