WGLS-FM Claims Awards In Philly PPA & NJBA Best of the Best

Rowan Radio added to its award total on Wednesday in competitions held by the Philadelphia Press Association and the New Jersey Broadcasters Association.

WGLS-FM News Director Waldy Diez received first place honors in the NJBA’s Student Division for Best News Reporting. Diez’s entry, produced for The Rowan Report, covered the Tent State University event at Rowan University, which focused on the state of higher education through a series of lectures and other activities.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Press Association recognized three Rowan Radio programs in its annual media competition.

Hosted by radio veteran and Rowan University adjunct instructor Paul Perrello, Studio 89.7 won first place in the Radio Feature category for an interview with Philadelphia broadcasting legend Jerry Blavat.

This is the fifth award for the Blavat program. The show received recognition from the Communicator Awards, Garden State Journalists Association, Hermes Awards, and New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists.

Smoking: Unfiltered earned second place in the Philadelphia Press Association’s Enterprise Reporting category. The 30-minute documentary produced by Christina Maxwell and Philip Blandino, examined how nicotine addiction impacts college students.

Made in conjunction with WGLS-FM Assistant Station Manager Derek Jones’s Radio Production class, the documentary also placed in competitions by the Garden State Journalists Association and New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists.

African American Profile received an honorable mention nod in the Enterprise Reporting category.

Host Omarey Williams spoke with Anthony “Bubba” Green, a former NFL player for the Baltimore Colts, who has devoted his time to enriching the youth of Baltimore through coaching and eventually mentoring truants at the University of Baltimore School of Law.

WGLS-FM has won 213 national and regional awards since 1993.
