The Blue Rocks hit a rough patch last week, losing two of three to Lynchburg before being victimized by Frederick with a four-game sweep. The 1-6 week dropped the Blue Crew to a first-place tie in Carolina League North with Frederick, and things won’t get any easier when the Salem Red Sox come into town at Frawley Stadium for a three-game set. The Red Sox have a Carolina League best 20-8 record on the season.
Hitting will likely dictate who comes out on top in a series that could be a potential Mills Cup Series preview. Salem’s .270 team batting average (best in the CL) far exceeds Wilmington’s .231 mark (second-worst in the CL). However, the Blue Crew will have two of their top guns hitting the mound in the first two games of the series.
Righty Jake Odorizzi (2-0, 2.42) will start tonight, coming off back-to-back wins and 28 strikeouts in his last three starts. He’s recently living up to hype as the prized prospect in the Royals’ trade of former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke to the Brewers, so tonight’s game will be a can’t-miss battle.
Lefty Noel Arguelles (1-1, 2.28) is the only Blue Rocks on the Royals’ 40-man roster in September, and he’s played like a future MLB arm by allowing only two earned runs in his first four starts before Thursday’s loss to Frederick. Arguelles will work with stellar piggybacker Michael Mariot (3-0, 1.10) tomorrow night.
Make sure to catch the action of Blue Rocks baseball against the Salem Red Sox for the next three nights, beginning tonight at 6:05pm, only on Rowan Radio!
